Classic coastal walk
San Simeon Point Trail
San Simeon Bay • Coastal Bluff And Beach Trail • Iconic Coastal Ramble
A mellow out-and-back from the pier to a forested point with wide ocean views and plenty of chances to drop down to the sand.
Starting from William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach, this route threads through Monterey pines and along low cliffs to the tip of San Simeon Point. It is an easy-going hike with soft sand sections and side paths to pocket coves, making it a good fit for mixed-ability groups. Go early or near sunset for quieter paths and the best light on the bay.
02
Seal-viewing highlight
Boucher Trail at Piedras Blancas
Piedras Blancas Coast • Wildlife-Rich Coastal Bluff Trail • Best For Elephant Seal Viewing
A mostly flat bluff-top path that links classic Highway 1 scenery with close-up looks at the northern elephant seal rookery.
This trail runs along low cliffs above the elephant seal viewing areas just north of San Simeon, with side viewpoints that rarely feel crowded away from the main boardwalk. Expect wind, surf pounding the rocks below, and near-constant wildlife watching, from seals on the beach to pelicans overhead. It is short enough for a quick stop yet rewarding enough to linger with binoculars and a camera.
03
Easy inland option
Washburn Campground & San Simeon Creek Trails
Hearst San Simeon State Park • Creekside And Coastal Terrace Loop • Best Easy Family Hike
Gentle paths loop from the Washburn Campground through grassy terraces and along San Simeon Creek, with ocean views never far away.
If the bluffs are fogged in or you want a softer, more sheltered walk, these trails deliver a mix of creekside vegetation, open meadows, and glimpses of the Pacific. The grades are mild and the footing straightforward, so kids and casual walkers can settle into the landscape without worrying about drop-offs. Bring layers; inland sections can feel warmer than the breezy shoreline just across Highway 1.
04
Most dramatic descent
Ragged Point Cliffside Trail
Ragged Point, North Of San Simeon • Steep Oceanfront Canyon Path • Most Dramatic Views
A short but very steep trail that plunges from the Ragged Point bluffs to a wild black-sand cove backed by waterfalls and sheer cliffs.
About 15 miles north of San Simeon, this trail feels like a sneak preview of Big Sur’s rugged character without the long drive. The descent is quick and demanding, with loose sections that make trekking poles useful on the way back up, but the payoff is a secluded pocket beach framed by towering cliffs. Tackle it when conditions are dry and plan extra time to catch your breath on the climb out while taking in the sweeping coastal panorama.
05
Quiet coastal preserve
Harmony Headlands State Park Trail
Between Cambria And Cayucos • Open Coastal Prairie And Bluff Trail • Best Half-Day Escape
A gently rolling path through coastal grasslands to lonely bluffs where you are more likely to hear breakers and shorebirds than traffic.
A short drive south of San Simeon, this state park feels far removed from Highway 1 despite its easy access. The main trail crosses open ranchland before ending at rocky points and tide-washed inlets where you can roam informal paths along the edge. There is little shade and no services at the trailhead, so bring water, a wind layer, and time to sit on the rocks watching for whales and dolphins offshore.
