Iconic canyon adventure
Santa Paula Canyon to the Punch Bowls
Santa Paula Canyon North Of Town • Rugged Creek-And-Canyon Route • Must-Do Local Classic
Rocky, adventurous creek hike to emerald pools and waterfalls above Santa Paula.
This is the hike locals name first: a sometimes-scrambly canyon route that follows Santa Paula Creek past swimming holes to sculpted Punch Bowl pools and falls. Expect creek crossings, boulder-hopping, and a bit of route-finding as you push deeper into the canyon. Go early on hot days, and bring sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting wet.
02
Easy access, big payoff
Harmon Canyon Preserve
Low Foothills Between Ventura And Santa Paula • Well-Signed Preserve With Singletrack And Ranch Roads • Best Close-To-Town Leg-Stretcher
Rolling oak canyon trails with optional climbs to wide coastal and valley views.
Harmon Canyon is a great choice when you want real trail underfoot without a long drive or navigation puzzles. Start with the mellow canyon road and peel off onto steeper singletrack if you’re chasing views over Ventura, the Channel Islands, and inland toward Santa Paula. Shaded stretches, clear signage, and varied distances make it friendly for mixed-ability groups.
03
Big climb, bigger views
Gridley Trail to Nordhoff Peak
Ojai Front Country Above The Valley • Steep Ridgeline Climb With Big Mountain Views • Top Pick For Strong Hikers Chasing Views
Sustained ascent from orange groves to sweeping vistas over Ojai and the Topatopa range.
Starting at the edge of Ojai’s orchards, Gridley Trail wastes little time gaining elevation as it switchbacks into chaparral and pine. Stick with it to the fire road and Nordhoff fire lookout area for a commanding panorama that takes in the valley, nearby peaks, and on clear days, a hint of the Pacific. It’s exposed and strenuous, so plan for heat, water, and an early start.
04
Laid-back country miles
Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park Loop
Rolling Hills East Of Moorpark • Gentle Chaparral Canyon Loop System • Relaxed Half-Day Outing With Options
Wide paths and looping routes through quiet ranchland-style hills and open canyon country.
Happy Camp offers a different flavor from the steep canyons closer to Santa Paula, with broad dirt roads winding through open grass and low chaparral. It’s a great spot for longer but less intense mileage, with views that open up as you climb onto the ridgelines. Wind, sun, and lack of water are the main factors here, so pack accordingly and enjoy the big sky feel.
05
Wild river escape
Sespe River Trail from Piedra Blanca
Sespe Wilderness Backcountry Near Fillmore • Remote River Corridor With Wide Open Desert-Feel Canyon • Best For All-Day Explorations And Backpackers
Long, mostly gentle river trail through sandstone formations, beaches, and broad canyon bends.
From the Piedra Blanca trailhead, the Sespe River Trail quickly feels far from town, winding past pale sandstone outcrops and broad river crossings. Day hikers can choose an out-and-back distance to riverside camps and beaches, while backpackers can push deeper toward hot springs and more remote camps. It’s hotter, drier, and more committing than it first appears, so treat it like true wilderness even though it’s just up the road from Santa Paula.
