01
Best overall wild escape
Wind Wolves Preserve
Southwest Of Bakersfield • Expansive Wildlife Preserve With Canyon And Grassland Trails • Best All-Day Escape Into Wild Terrain
A huge, free-to-visit preserve with miles of trails through open grasslands, oak-studded hills, and a dramatic canyon.
Wind Wolves is where many Kern County locals go when they want to feel far from town without an overnight trip. The San Emigdio Canyon area offers a mix of easy creekside walking and longer climbs into the surrounding hills, with spring wildflowers and frequent wildlife sightings. Go early on hot days, bring plenty of water, and plan on hanging around for sunset if you enjoy wide open sky views.
02
Closest bluff hike
Panorama Vista Preserve
Bakersfield Bluffs • Urban-Edge Bluff And River Overlook Trails • Quick Local Escape With Big Views
Short dirt paths along the bluffs and down toward the Kern River make this an easy, close-to-town hike with wide valley views.
From Smith Corner, Panorama Vista is one of the fastest ways to get onto a real dirt trail after work. The looping routes along the bluff edge look out over the Kern River and downtown Bakersfield, and you can drop lower to walk among restoration plantings and river vegetation. It is not wilderness, but it feels surprisingly open and airy for how close it sits to the city grid.
03
Best family-friendly foothill option
Hart Memorial Park & Kern River Trails
Northeast Bakersfield Foothills • Shaded Riverfront Park With Rolling Foothill Paths • Best For Relaxed Family Strolls
Lawns, lakes, and picnic areas blend into easy dirt paths that climb gently into the surrounding hills above the Kern River.
Hart Park is the go-to when your group includes a mix of hikers and non-hikers. You can start on paved and packed-dirt paths along the river, then hop onto steeper foothill routes for wider views of the valley while others linger by the water or playgrounds. In cooler months, the green hills and scattered oaks make it feel far less urban than its short drive from Smith Corner suggests.
04
Best canyon workout
Mill Creek Trail in the Kern River Canyon
Greenhorn Mountains Near Lake Isabella • Rugged River Canyon Singletrack • Best For Strong Hikers Chasing Elevation
A steeper, more rugged trail that winds above the Kern River, offering big canyon views and a more remote feel.
If you are ready to move beyond park paths, the Mill Creek area in the Kern River Canyon delivers a real mountain-hike experience within day-trip range. Expect narrow tread, some rocky sections, and steady climbing as you contour high above the river and look across to the opposite canyon wall. Start early, watch summer temperatures, and treat this as a solid half-day outing with a rewarding sense of accomplishment at the turnaround point.
05
Iconic sequoia day trip
Trail of 100 Giants
Giant Sequoia National Monument • High-Elevation Sequoia Forest Loop • Iconic Day Trip Into The Mountains
An easy loop through a grove of giant sequoias, ideal when you want cooler air and a classic Sierra forest experience.
This one requires a longer drive from Smith Corner, but the payoff is walking among some of the largest trees on earth. The main loop is mostly level and well-marked, making it accessible for casual hikers while still feeling special enough for a full-day outing. Pair the walk with a picnic and a few short side paths, and it becomes a reliable summer escape from the valley heat.
