Best overall pick
Lake Spaulding via Pioneer Trail
Off Highway 20 Near Lake Spaulding • Forest Singletrack Following A Historic Route • Best Overall Sierra Day Hike Near Spaulding
A classic forested trail that rolls along an old emigrant route before opening to big views over Lake Spaulding and its granite basin.
Starting from a trailhead off Highway 20, the Pioneer Trail dips in and out of shade, crossing small creeks and pockets of wildflowers on its way toward the lake. The grade stays moderate, so most reasonably fit hikers can turn it into a relaxed half-day outing. Watch for bikes on busier weekends and bring layers, as weather can change fast at this elevation.

Big-view adventure
Grouse Ridge and Glacier Lake Trail
Grouse Ridge Road Above Bowman Lake • High-Country Ridge Hike With Alpine Lakes • Best For Big Sierra Views
A rugged high-elevation route that strings together granite ridges, tarns, and wide-open panoramas of the northern Sierra.
From the Grouse Ridge area, the trail undulates along exposed ridgelines before dropping toward Glacier Lake, with vantage points that take in Castle Peak, English Mountain, and a whole chain of blue lakes. Expect rocky footing and some steep sections that reward you with a true backcountry feel not far from Spaulding. The road in can be rough, so higher-clearance vehicles and an early start pay off here.

Lake Spaulding East Shore and Dam Walk
Near Lake Spaulding Dam And Campground • Easy Lakeside Ramble On Mixed Surfaces • Quick Scenic Stretch-Your-Legs Option
An easygoing walk that links the dam, shoreline, and granite viewpoints right above the blue water of Lake Spaulding.
If you are camped near the dam, you can step straight out to a network of informal paths and service roads tracing the reservoir’s eastern edge. Short spur trails lead to rocky slabs and little coves where you can sit with a coffee, watch the morning light move across the water, or catch sunset without committing to a full hike. The footing is generally straightforward, but keep an eye on kids and dogs near drop-offs and the dam works.

Swim-and-hike combo
Emerald Pools and South Yuba River Canyon
South Yuba River Off Highway 20 • Short Canyon Hike With Swimming Holes • Best For Hot Summer Afternoons
A short but dramatic riverside walk that pairs polished granite pools with cool, clear South Yuba water.
Down canyon from Spaulding along Highway 20, trail segments and use paths hug the South Yuba as it tumbles through narrow rock chutes and deeper pools known collectively as Emerald Pools. The walking itself is not long, but scrambling down to the water and exploring upstream and downstream can fill an afternoon. Go early on weekends for quieter conditions, and always judge water levels and currents before committing to a swim or jump.
