Best close-to-home workout
Dictionary Hill County Preserve
Spring Valley Foothills • Steep Neighborhood Preserve Trail • Best Close-To-Home Workout
A short but steep climb from neighborhood streets up Dictionary Hill to big views over Spring Valley and the South Bay.
If you want a quick hike right in town, this is the go-to climb. The main route is only a couple of miles round-trip, but the grade is steady enough to get your legs and lungs working. Start from the end of Ivy Street, expect some loose sections, and bring water—there’s little shade but plenty of payoff with 360-degree views at the top.
02
Most versatile trail network
Sweetwater Summit Regional Park & Trails
South Of Spring Valley, Near Bonita • Riverside Park And Multi-Use Trail Network • Great For Mixed Groups
Rolling paths along the Sweetwater River offer mellow options for walkers plus longer loops for hikers who want to stretch things out.
Just a short drive south, Sweetwater gives you a surprisingly green corridor with river views, dirt paths, and open-space feel. You can keep it easy with shorter out-and-backs near the river or link trails for a few hours of hiking around the reservoir. Expect shared use with bikers and equestrians and bring a hat—the sun can be strong on the more open stretches.

Classic summit hike
Cowles Mountain, Mission Trails Regional Park
Northwest, Mission Trails Regional Park • Urban-Adjacent Mountain Summit Network • Iconic San Diego Climb
A well-marked, rocky path to the 1,593-foot summit of Cowles Mountain with panoramic views from the ocean to the backcountry.
Cowles is one of the most popular peaks in the county, and it’s close enough to Spring Valley for a regular training hike. The main route is about three miles round-trip with a steady, moderate climb and a few rockier steps near the top. Go early or near sunset to beat both the heat and the crowds, and consider tacking on Pyles Peak if you want a longer, quieter loop.
04
Best ridgeline views
Mother Miguel Mountain via Rock House Trail
Southeast, Near Eastlake And The Wildlife Refuge • Rocky Ridgeline Out-And-Back • Best For Big Views With Fewer Crowds
A moderate, sometimes rocky ascent to a ridge with sweeping views over the Otay Lakes and surrounding hills.
Mother Miguel feels a bit more rugged than the in-town peaks but is still manageable in a morning. The trail climbs steadily from neighborhood streets onto a rocky ridge, with broad views that open up early in the hike and only get better near the summit. Watch your footing on loose sections, pack plenty of water, and avoid the midday heat—there’s very little shade out here.

Top backcountry escape
Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area
East Of Spring Valley, Near Jamul • Rolling Backcountry Canyon Route • Weekend Nature Escape
A gently rolling canyon system with wide dirt paths, seasonal creek crossings, and a more remote feel than in-town trails.
For a change of pace from steep summit grinds, head out to Hollenbeck’s broad canyon trails. The main route follows an old ranch road, with side paths that let you extend the hike into a half-day wander among oaks, grasslands, and low hills. It can get hot and dusty, so start early, keep an eye out for wildlife and grazing cattle, and be prepared for creek crossings after wet weather.
