Best big-view summit
Isabella Peak – Coso Mine Trail
South Shore Of Lake Isabella • High-Desert Peak Trail With Historic Mining Relics • Top Pick For Wide-Open Views Close To Town
A steep, satisfying climb above the south shore that rewards you with sweeping 360-degree views over Lake Isabella and the surrounding ranges.
From Squirrel Mountain Valley, this is one of the quickest ways to get a true summit experience without an all-day drive. The path climbs steadily through scrub and boulders, passing old mining ruins before topping out on a rocky high point with big-sky vistas. Start early on hot days and bring plenty of water—there’s little shade but plenty of payoff.

Classic river canyon route
Whiskey Flat Trail
Kernville • Riverside Canyon Trail Tracing Old Homesteads • Best For A Full But Flexible Day Out
A historic Kern River path that can be done as a short out-and-back or stretched into a longer day hike through rolling foothills.
Starting near downtown Kernville, this trail follows the Kern River upstream along an old wagon route, with views of riffles, rock gardens, and scattered oaks. You can turn around at any point, making it easy to match the outing to your group’s energy and the weather. Watch for old cabin sites and spring wildflowers, and expect rocky, uneven footing in places.
03
Iconic sequoia grove stroll
Trail of 100 Giants
Sequoia National Forest – Long Meadow Grove • Paved Forest Loop Through Giant Sequoias • Best Easy Walk For All Ages
A short, mostly level loop that winds among towering sequoias, perfect when you want big scenery without a strenuous hike.
Although it’s a bit of a drive from Squirrel Mountain Valley, locals still count this as a must-do when introducing friends to the region. The loop is well-marked and relatively gentle, with benches and side spurs that let you linger among some of the largest trees on earth. Go early or on weekdays for quieter moments, and bring layers—the forest stays cool even when the valley bakes.
04
Best birding and nature walk
Kern River Preserve Nature Trail
Weldon • Short Riparian Nature Trail Through Cottonwoods And Willows • Relaxed Outing For Wildlife And Shade
A gentle loop along the Kern River’s lush corridor, ideal for birdwatching, photography, and slower-paced exploration.
Just east of Squirrel Mountain Valley, this preserve offers a welcome contrast to the dry hillsides surrounding Lake Isabella. The path meanders through cottonwood groves and along side channels where you’re likely to hear, if not see, a variety of songbirds and raptors. It’s a great choice for hot afternoons or mixed groups where not everyone wants a big climb.
05
Wild-feeling foothill trek
Mill Creek Trail
North Of Kernville • Rugged Foothill Singletrack Above The Kern River • Best For Experienced Hikers Seeking Solitude
A longer, more rugged route that contours above the river, offering a mix of canyon views, creek crossings, and rocky sections.
This trail feels wilder than many in the valley, with stretches where you may not see another hiker for hours. Expect a mix of gradual climbs and narrow sidehill traverses, plus seasonal stream crossings that add to the adventure. Good footwear, plenty of water, and comfort on uneven terrain are important here, but the sense of space and the river panoramas more than repay the effort.
