Sutter Buttes Guided Hikes
Near Sutter Buttes • Guided Volcanic Butte Hike • Best For Big Views And Geology Buffs
Guided-only treks into the Sutter Buttes offer wide-open valley views, rocky ridgelines, and a real sense of hiking on private, rarely seen land.
To legally hike into the Sutter Buttes, you join a guided interpretive outing, typically offered in the cooler months. Expect anything from moderate rambles through oak-studded ranchland to steeper climbs that gain airy ridges and panoramic views over orchards and rice fields. Trips fill up quickly and access is limited, so plan ahead and be ready for primitive conditions—no visitor center, no services, and lots of open country.

Easiest in-town option
Feather River Parkway
Yuba City Riverfront • Flat Riverside Path • Best For Casual Strolls
A mellow levee-top and riverside path that’s ideal for quick walks, jogs, and family bike rides close to Sutter and Yuba City.
Feather River Parkway strings together paved and dirt paths along the river, so you can choose anything from a short leg-stretcher to a longer out-and-back. Locals use it for everyday exercise because it’s flat, easy to follow, and close to town, with views of the water, sandbars, and birdlife. Go early or near sunset for softer light and cooler temperatures, and be prepared for limited shade in midday sun.

Best for birdwatchers
Black Swan Trail
Foothills Near Yuba River • Wildlife-Rich Wetland Loop • Top Birdwatching Pick
A short, mostly gentle loop around ponds and old river channels that’s packed with birds, wildflowers, and big-sky views toward the Buttes.
The Black Swan Trail winds through a mix of riparian woodland, ponds, and open grassland, making it a reliable spot for waterfowl, raptors, and spring wildflowers. The route itself is straightforward, with only mild ups and downs, so it’s a good choice if you want more nature than effort. Bring binoculars, expect some muddy sections after storms, and enjoy the sense of being out in the country without a long drive from Sutter.
04
Rugged river canyon outing
Rice's Crossing Preserve
North Yuba River Canyon • Remote Canyon Trail System • Best For Longer Day Hikes
Steeper singletrack trails drop into the Yuba River canyon here, rewarding the effort with clear water, solitude, and classic foothill scenery.
Rice's Crossing Preserve offers a more backcountry feel than most local options, with narrow trails that wind down through oaks and pines toward the Yuba River. The climbs back out are real workouts, especially on warm days, but you’re repaid with quiet stretches of river, swimming holes in season, and long views up and down the canyon. Carry plenty of water, watch for poison oak and ticks, and don’t count on cell service once you leave the road.

Waterfall and wildflower favorite
Spenceville Wildlife Area
Foothills Near Browns Valley • Rolling Grassland And Waterfall Hike • Best Spring Wildflower Hike
Miles of rolling ranchland trails lead to seasonal waterfalls and quiet creeks, with wide-open views and spring wildflowers stealing the show.
Spenceville’s network of old ranch roads and singletrack lets you tailor anything from a gentle wander to a half-day hike, with popular routes heading to Fairy Falls and along Dry Creek. In spring, the green hills light up with lupine, poppies, and goldfields, but even in other seasons you’ll find plenty of space, grazing wildlife, and big horizons. Expect rough access roads, no treated water, and minimal signage—this is more wild country than developed park, which is exactly why locals love it.
