Signature shoreline classic
Rubicon Trail
D.L. Bliss To Emerald Bay • Iconic Lakeside Day Hike • All-Day Scenic Standout
A rolling singletrack that hugs Tahoe’s West Shore cliffs with nonstop views between D.L. Bliss and Emerald Bay.
If you want the archetypal Lake Tahoe shoreline hike, this is it: turquoise coves below, granite walls above, and peaks framing the whole scene. Start from D.L. Bliss for slightly easier grades and commit to as much of the point-to-point as your group feels up for, turning around when you’re ready. Go early for calmer water, cooler temps, and a better shot at parking inside the park.

Best quick view hike
Eagle Rock Trail
Near Homewood On The West Shore • Short Volcanic Viewpoint Scramble • Fast Sunset Favorite
A steep but brief climb up an old volcanic plug that delivers one of the widest panoramas of Tahoe’s West Shore.
From the small roadside pullout, the trail wastes no time gaining elevation, weaving through trees before popping you onto open rock. The summit area is broad enough to spread out, with sweeping views from South Lake to the North Shore on a clear day. It’s a perfect pick for a leg-stretcher on arrival day or a low-commitment sunset outing after time on the beach.

Best full-day adventure
Meeks Bay to Desolation Wilderness Lakes
Meeks Bay, South Of Tahoma • Backcountry-Feeling Forest And Creek Trail • Scenic Lake-Bagging Route
A gradually climbing trail up Meeks Creek that leads into Desolation Wilderness and a string of quiet alpine lakes.
Starting just above Meeks Bay, the path follows an old road grade through mixed forest before narrowing into a true mountain trail. Many hikers aim for Lake Genevieve or Stony Ridge Lake, where granite slabs and clear water make ideal lunch or swim stops. It has a more remote feel than the shoreline hikes, so pack for changing weather, bring plenty of water, and expect a rewarding full day out.

Best mix of history and scenery
Vikingsholm and Lower Eagle Falls Trail
Emerald Bay State Park • Scenic Bay-To-Ridge Out-And-Back • Crowd-Pleasing Classic
A steep paved path drops to Vikingsholm at the edge of Emerald Bay, with an optional side trip to Lower Eagle Falls.
From the busy Emerald Bay parking lot, the trail descends quickly to lake level, where Vikingsholm’s Scandinavian-style stone manor anchors a sandy shoreline. A short spur leads to the base of Lower Eagle Falls, especially impressive in early summer when runoff is strong. The climb back out is no joke at altitude, so give yourself time, take breaks, and treat it as a slow, scenic return rather than a race.

Best mellow family wander
Sugar Pine Point and Z'Berg Natural Preserve Loop
Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park • Shady Lakeside Loop Through Old-Growth Forest • Relaxed Stroll Near The Water
Gentle paths link lakeside estates, quiet coves, and tall pines just a few minutes from Tahoma.
This network of easy trails is ideal when you want time outside without committing to a big climb or long mileage. You can wander along the shoreline, detour through the Z'Berg Natural Preserve, and explore historic park buildings, all with frequent chances to step down to the water. It’s a great choice for families, casual walkers, or rest days between bigger West Shore hikes.
