Best overall pick
Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve
Near Winters And Lake Berryessa • Steep Canyon And Ridge Loop With Big Views • Iconic Day Hike For Strong Legs
A classic climb with rewarding vistas over Lake Berryessa and the Coast Range just a short drive from Tancred.
The main loop at Stebbins Cold Canyon wastes no time gaining elevation, zigzagging up through chaparral to a panoramic ridge. On clear days you can see the folded green hills above Putah Creek and far out toward the Central Valley. Go early on warm days, carry plenty of water, and expect steady climbing and uneven footing.
02
Closest canyon climb
Blue Ridge Trail, Cache Creek Regional Park
Cache Creek Regional Park, North Of Rumsey • Rocky Ridge Hike Above A Deep River Canyon • Challenging Local Favorite
A steep, rugged route that hauls you from the banks of Cache Creek up to airy views along Blue Ridge.
Starting from the lower day-use area along Highway 16, the trail heads straight uphill, quickly leaving the oaks for open, grassy slopes. The payoff is a balcony-like traverse along Blue Ridge with sweeping views down into the Cache Creek canyon and across the Capay Valley toward Tancred. It is best tackled in cool weather, as there is little shade and plenty of loose rock underfoot.
03
Best spring wildflowers
Cowboy Camp, Cache Creek Natural Area
Upper Capay Valley Along Highway 16 • Rolling Creekside Hills And Oak-Studded Rangeland • Best For Mellow Half-Day Walks
Gentle ranch roads and singletrack fan out from this small trailhead, ideal for easier rambles among oaks and spring blooms.
Cowboy Camp sits right off Highway 16 but feels surprisingly open and wild once you wander away from the parking area. You can follow old ranch lanes across soft hillsides, drop toward Cache Creek, or make short loops that stay within sight of the trailhead. In a good year the grassy slopes are painted with California poppies and lupine, making this a forgiving and scenic choice when you do not want a huge climb.
04
Quiet weekend loop
Fiske Creek Trail, Cache Creek Natural Area
Remote Cache Creek Backcountry Off Highway 16 • Shaded Creek Trail With Small Waterfalls And Pools • Good For Quieter Weekends And Cool-Weather Outings
A more tucked-away option that follows a small creek through mixed forest and open clearings, with fewer crowds than the main Cache Creek trailheads.
Reaching the Fiske Creek area involves a stretch of dirt road, but the reward is a more secluded corner of the Cache Creek hills. The path traces the creek through patches of oak and bay, with side spurs that climb onto nearby ridges for broader views. It is especially pleasant in late fall and early spring, when the water is running and temperatures are mild.

Easiest family walk
Davis–Covell Greenbelt Trail
Greenbelts Of North Davis • Paved Greenbelt Path Through Parks And Neighborhoods • Best For Stroller-Friendly Walks And Easy Spins
A flat, well-kept path network that offers an easygoing alternative to the steep foothill hikes closer to Tancred.
When the foothills are baking or muddy, the Davis greenbelts are a practical way to stretch your legs without driving far. The Davis–Covell route strings together ponds, small play areas, and shady stretches of path, and it works just as well for a relaxed walk as for a cruiser-bike lap. It lacks big views, but it is safe, accessible, and easy to customize into as short or long an outing as you like.
