01
Best overall ridge hike
Eagle Rock via Musch Trail
Topanga State Park – Trippet Ranch • Scenic Loop With Sandstone Outcrops • Classic Topanga Must-Do
A rewarding climb to a hulking sandstone viewpoint with wide-open canyon and city vistas.
Starting from Trippet Ranch, this loop threads through oaks and chaparral before popping out on the broad shoulder of Eagle Rock. The mix of singletrack and wider fire road keeps things interesting, and the views span from the Santa Monica Mountains toward downtown on a clear day. Go early on weekends if you want parking and a bit more quiet on the summit slabs.
02
Best for ocean panoramas
Parker Mesa Overlook
Santa Monica Mountains – South Of Topanga • Ocean-View Ridge Hike • Top Pick For Sunset
A steady ridge walk to a bluff with sweeping views over the Pacific and the coastline.
Whether you come in from Los Liones or via the fire road from Topanga State Park, Parker Mesa Overlook feels like a front-row seat above the ocean. The trail is exposed, so you get big sky and big views for most of the hike, with benches at the overlook to linger. Time it for golden hour and you’ll see why this is one of the area’s most photographed spots.
03
Most unique terrain
Red Rock Canyon Park to Calabasas Peak
Red Rock Canyon Park – Old Topanga • Canyon And Sandstone Labyrinth • Best For Geology Lovers
A shorter but dramatic outing through sculpted red sandstone leading toward bigger mountain views.
Tucked off Old Topanga Canyon Road, this trail feels a bit more tucked away than the main state park routes. The first stretch winds between towering red formations, with side pockets and alcoves that feel almost desert-like despite the coastal air. Turn around at the canyon or continue climbing toward Calabasas Peak for a more strenuous day and broad valley vistas.
04
Best shaded escape
Hondo Canyon Trail
Topanga Canyon – North • Shaded Canyon Climb • Quieter Backcountry Feel
A cooler, tree-lined route that climbs from the canyon floor toward the Backbone Trail system.
Hondo Canyon starts right off Topanga Canyon Boulevard but quickly feels removed from the road once you slip into the trees. Expect a mix of shade, creek crossings in wetter months, and a steady grade as you gain elevation and connect toward the higher Backbone Trail. It’s a solid choice on warmer days when the exposed ridges are less appealing.
05
Best near-the-coast loop
Temescal Canyon Loop
Pacific Palisades – Temescal Gateway Park • Classic Coastal Canyon Loop • Great Half-Day Close To The Beach
A popular loop with canyon shade, a seasonal waterfall, and a ridge segment with ocean views.
Just south of Topanga, Temescal offers an efficient loop that still feels like a real hike, especially if you take the steeper side first. The lower canyon can be lush after winter rains, and the small waterfall adds a nice bonus when it’s running. Once you climb onto the higher trail, you’re rewarded with views down to the Pacific and across to the Palisades.
