01
Best in-town hike
Arroyo Verde Park
East Ventura Hills • City Park Canyon Loop Network • Family-Friendly Favorite
Short, punchy loops climb from shady lawns into dry canyons with big views back over Ventura and the coast.
Arroyo Verde is where many locals go when they want a real hike without leaving city limits. The lower park is easygoing, with playgrounds and picnic tables, while dirt trails quickly gain elevation on the surrounding hills. Pick a mellow loop or link the steeper ridges for a heart-pounding workout and sunset views over the Pacific.
02
Closest wild-feeling escape
Harmon Canyon Preserve
Foothills North Of Ventura • Oak-Filled Preserve With Fire Road And Singletrack • Best For Longer Weekend Hikes
A broad, oak-lined canyon leads into quieter side valleys and ridges that feel much farther from town than they are.
Harmon Canyon starts gently on a wide dirt road before rising into rolling foothills and side canyons that soak up afternoon light. It is an easy place to stretch a casual stroll into a half-day outing by pushing farther up the main canyon or exploring signed side trails. Expect open sun on the upper slopes, so start early on hot days and pack more water than you think you need.
03
Easiest viewpoint climb
Ventura Botanic Gardens Trail
Above Downtown Ventura • Garden Hillside Path With Switchbacks • Best For Sunset Strolls
A steady, graded trail weaves through drought-loving plant collections to a sweeping overlook of the city and Channel Islands.
Rising directly above downtown, the main Botanic Gardens trail is a quick way to feel far from the streets below. The path is well-maintained, with gentle switchbacks, benches, and changing views of coastal plants and the harbor. It is ideal when you want light effort with maximum payoff, especially in the golden hour when the islands stand out on the horizon.
04
Iconic island day hike
Potato Harbor and Cavern Point Loop, Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz Island, Accessed From Ventura Harbor • Clifftop Island Loop Above Coves • Best Full-Day Adventure
Gentle island trails trace the headlands between Cavern Point and Potato Harbor, never straying far from expansive ocean views.
Once you step off the boat at Scorpion Anchorage, this loop is the classic way to experience the front side of Santa Cruz Island. The hike is moderate but almost entirely exposed, with grassy bluffs dropping to turquoise coves and seabirds wheeling below. Plan it as a relaxed counterclockwise loop, give yourself time for photos at each viewpoint, and remember that all food and water have to come with you from the mainland.
05
Most dramatic coastal climb
Mugu Peak Trail
Point Mugu State Park, South Of Ventura • Steep Coastal Ridge Hike • Best For Strong Legs And Big Views
A short but steep ascent from the Pacific Coast Highway rockets you onto a sharp ridgeline above coastal cliffs and broad inland canyons.
From the pullout near the Point Mugu rock, the trail wastes no time heading uphill, gaining views with every switchback. The summit ridge feels surprisingly rugged, with the coastline curving away in both directions and the Santa Monica Mountains folding inland. It is a compact outing with real elevation gain, best tackled in cooler parts of the day with grippy shoes and a wind layer for the exposed top.
