Best close-to-town loop
Lodi Lake Nature Loop
Lodi • Shaded Riverside Park Trail • Easy Family Walk
A mellow loop around Lodi Lake with plenty of shade, river views, and spots to step down to the water.
From Victor, this is the quickest way to get onto a legit trail without committing to a long drive. The loop mixes paved and packed-dirt sections under big valley oaks, with side paths to the Mokelumne River and picnic areas that make it easy to turn a short walk into a relaxed afternoon. Go early on summer weekends if you want quieter paths and cooler temperatures.

Top birdwatching pick
Cosumnes Nature Loop
Cosumnes River Preserve Near Galt • Wildlife-Rich Wetland Boardwalk And Levee Trail • Best For Birders And Photographers
A gentle loop through wetlands and riparian forest where sandhill cranes, herons, and raptors are regulars in season.
The Cosumnes Nature Loop feels surprisingly wild for being just a short drive from farm country. Elevated boardwalks and levees carry you over seasonal ponds and sloughs, with great sightlines for spotting waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors riding the thermals. Winter and early spring bring the biggest bird numbers, but sunrise and sunset are rewarding year-round.
03
Best paved path escape
Laguna Creek Trail
Elk Grove • Suburban Greenbelt Multi-Use Trail • Bike-And-Stroller Friendly Choice
A long, mostly paved greenbelt along Laguna Creek that works as an easy walk, jog, or bike ride with plenty of access points.
If you want something flatter and more continuous than a park loop, the Laguna Creek Trail is a solid option. The path threads behind neighborhoods along a green corridor, with stretches of open space, small ponds, and occasional wildlife despite the suburban setting. It is ideal for low-key miles, especially if you are pushing a stroller or mixing walking with casual biking.

Most rugged outing
Independence Flat Trail Loop
Mokelumne River Foothills Northeast Of Victor • Foothill River Canyon Loop • Scenic Day Hike
A more demanding loop dropping toward the Mokelumne River with rolling climbs, open views, and spring wildflowers.
When you are ready for something beyond an hour-long stroll, head for the Independence Flat area in the lower foothills. The loop uses old roads and singletrack to weave through grasslands and oak woodland, with big-sky views and a more remote feel than the valley trails. Expect some short, steep sections, little shade in midsummer, and rewarding vistas down toward the Mokelumne.

Shadiest summer refuge
Caswell Memorial State Park Trails
Stanislaus River South Of Manteca • Dense Riverside Woodland Trails • Cooler-Day Or Hot-Afternoon Pick
Short, interconnecting trails wandering through rare riparian forest along the Stanislaus River.
Caswell Memorial State Park protects one of the last sizeable stands of valley oak riparian forest, and the trail network makes the most of that deep shade. Paths loop through lush understory to sandy river bends where you can cool your feet or watch for deer and woodpeckers. In bug season, bring repellent and be ready for a slower, more contemplative walk rather than a training hike.
