If you are willing to drive a bit farther from Walnut Grove, the Howard Ranch Trail rewards you with a more traditional day-hike feel. The route is mostly exposed, weaving over gentle hills through cattle country and vernal pool habitat that explodes with wildflowers in a good spring. Pack water, sun protection, and be ready for a few muddy stretches after rain.
