01
Best overall pick
Portuguese Bend Reserve
Palos Verdes Peninsula • Coastal Canyon Preserve With Wide Ocean Views • Best Ocean-View Cardio Hike
Rolling singletrack, coastal sage, and big Pacific views make Portuguese Bend the closest thing to a mini–Big Sur near West Carson.
A network of intersecting trails lets you dial in anything from a quick out-and-back to a longer loop with solid elevation gain. Expect exposed hillsides, switchbacks, and sweeping views over the Catalina Channel almost the whole way. Go early for cooler temps and easier parking along Crenshaw Boulevard near the main trailheads.
02
Best coastal escape
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park
Rancho Palos Verdes Coast • Bluffside Coastal Park With Coves And Tide Pools • Best For Casual Coastal Exploring
Short but scenic trails wind from clifftop viewpoints down to rocky coves and tide pools that feel a world away from the 110.
From the parking lot, paths fan out along the bluffs and down to the shoreline, where you can poke around tide pools at lower tides. The hikes here are more about meandering and lingering at overlooks than racking up miles, making it a good pick for mixed-ability groups. Bring sturdy shoes for the steeper descent and the cobbly beach sections.
03
Best close-to-home greenery
Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area
Baldwin Hills • Urban Hillside Park With Skyline Overlooks • Best For Quick Loops And Sunset Views
A web of dirt paths and stair climbs rises above a surprisingly green urban park, with skyline views that reward even short outings.
Once you’re up on the ridgeline, you get panoramic views stretching from the downtown towers to the Santa Monica Mountains on a clear day. Several short loops link together ponds, picnic lawns, and chaparral-covered hills, so it’s easy to improvise a route that matches your energy level. It’s especially nice late in the day when the light softens and the city starts to glow below you.
04
Iconic LA hike pick
Griffith Park – Mount Hollywood Area
Griffith Park / Los Feliz • Classic City Park With Rugged Chaparral Ridges • Best For First-Time La Visitors
Fire roads and singletrack climb from near the Griffith Observatory to ridges with postcard views of downtown and, on clear days, the ocean.
Starting near the observatory, you can follow well-traveled routes up toward Mount Hollywood for broad, 360-degree views over the basin. The terrain is mostly gradual but exposed, so start earlier in the day and bring water. It’s a bit of a drive from West Carson, but the combination of skyline vistas, Hollywood landmarks, and classic chaparral scenery earns its reputation as a must-do LA hike.
05
Best low-key trail network
Forrestal Nature Reserve
South Palos Verdes • Quiet Hillside Reserve With Crisscrossing Singletrack • Best For After-Work Rambles
Less trafficked than the better-known coastal parks, Forrestal offers rolling trails, ocean glimpses, and a more tucked-away feel.
Trails like Quarry Loop and Fossil Hill wind through old quarry cuts and open slopes dotted with coastal sage scrub. Elevation changes are steady but manageable, making it a nice spot when you want movement and views without a brutal climb. It’s close enough to swing by after work, yet quiet enough that you can often hear birds and surf more than traffic.
