A flat, paved stroll along the Sacramento River with front-row views of the downtown skyline and Tower Bridge.[1][3]
If you want a low-effort walk with a real sense of place, this is the one.[1] The path traces the riverbank with frequent benches and overlooks, making it easy to pause for photos of the riverboats and golden evening light on the city.[1][3] It’s popular but rarely overwhelming, and you can combine it with a meal or drink in the Bridge District to round out the outing.[3]

The Barge Canal Trail runs beside calm water and reeds, with long straight stretches that are ideal for an easy jog, stroller walk, or sunset dog outing.[1] It feels tucked away from traffic even though you’re close to neighborhoods and shopping, so it’s an easy choice when you only have an hour.[1] Go in the evening for cooler temps and reflections on the water, or early morning if you prefer a quieter scene.

Best all-day classic
Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail (American River Parkway)
American River Parkway, Sacramento • Scenic Paved River Trail With Dirt Spurs • Iconic Regional Outing
A 30-plus-mile path along the American River with countless options for shorter out-and-backs on pavement or dirt.[3][4]
A short drive from West Sacramento, the American River Parkway offers some of the region’s most beloved riverfront miles.[3][4] The main Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail is paved, but dirt side paths drop to beaches, side channels, and shady oak groves where you can turn a walk into more of a hike.[3] Pick a segment near Discovery Park or Watt Avenue for easier access, or head farther upstream toward Nimbus for a slightly wilder feel.[4]
