Big-views classic
Cerro Alto Trail
Between Atascadero And Morro Bay • Steep Summit Hike With Panoramic Coastal Views • Best Overall Workout-And-View Combo
A short, stout climb to one of the Central Coast's broadest 360-degree vistas.
The Cerro Alto Trail wastes no time gaining elevation, switchbacking through oak and chaparral to a fire lookout perch with views stretching from Morro Rock inland over wine country. Most hikers tackle the 4–5 mile out-and-back from the main campground trailhead, but there are a few side loops if you want extra climbing. Aim for clear mornings in summer or dramatic cloudscapes after winter storms.

Lake Nacimiento Shoreline Trail
North Of Paso Robles • Rolling Lakeside Singletrack And Dirt Roads • Best For Warm-Weather Rambles
Low-key shoreline paths with constant lake views and options to shorten or extend your walk.
When the foothills around Whitley Gardens start to bake, the trails at Lake Nacimiento offer breezier hiking along the water's edge. Expect gentle ups and downs, oak shade in spots, and plenty of coves and inlets to explore as you go. Check water levels and access points ahead of time, as conditions and parking areas can vary by season.

If you want movement without committing to a long drive or big climb, the Salinas River Walk is the go-to option from Whitley Gardens. The path threads behind neighborhoods and ballfields with glimpses of the river, cottonwoods, and wildlife, especially in the cooler hours. It is ideal for morning jogs, family walks, or stretching your legs between wine tasting stops.
