Iconic first stop
General Grant Tree Loop
Grant Grove Village • Paved Giant Sequoia Loop • Best For First-Time Visitors
A short, mostly paved loop that delivers the General Grant Tree and a compact tour of classic giant sequoia scenery.
If you only have time for one walk from Wilsonia, this is the easy win. The loop is gentle but immersive, winding past massive trunks, interpretive signs, and side spurs that let you see the grove from different angles. Go early or late in the day for softer light, easier parking, and a quieter feel than midday tour-bus hours.

Classic forest ramble
Sunset Trail
Ridges Above Grant Grove • Rolling Mixed-Forest Trail • Best Half-Day Outing
A longer, lightly traveled trail that trades crowds for rolling forest, meadows, and a more backcountry feel close to Wilsonia.
Starting near Grant Grove, the Sunset Trail strings together shady pine and fir forest, open clearings, and small creeks in a satisfying loop or out-and-back, depending on how far you go. It’s a solid choice when you want a few hours on your feet without committing to big elevation or a long drive. Pack water and a snack—this one feels more like a true hike than a stroll between viewpoints.

History-rich loop
Big Stump Basin Trail
Big Stump Entrance Area • Forest And Meadow Loop Through Old Logging Site • Best For History Buffs
A moderate loop that mixes giant stumps, forest, and meadows while telling the story of early logging in what is now the park.
Just a short drive west of Wilsonia, this loop drops into a basin dotted with huge sequoia stumps, including the famous Mark Twain stump you can walk onto. The interpretive signs add context about how the area was logged before it became protected, making the remaining live trees feel even more impressive. Expect some up-and-down but nothing technical, and look for wildflowers in the meadows in late spring and early summer.

A mellow loop linking the Manzanita and Azalea areas, ideal for a pre-breakfast walk or evening wind-down from Wilsonia.
This trail weaves through a mix of pine, fir, and low manzanita, never straying far from the campground but feeling surprisingly quiet, especially on shoulder-season weekdays.
