Classic city summit
Cowles Mountain
Mission Trails Regional Park • Steep City-Summit Hike • Iconic Local Favorite
A short, steady climb to the highest point in the City of San Diego with big views and a lively trail vibe.
From Winter Gardens, Cowles is the closest true summit hike that still feels like a real mountain. The main routes gain elevation quickly on a well-worn path, rewarding you with sweeping views from downtown to the mountains. Go early for cooler temps, easier parking, and a quieter climb.

Hardcore all-day outing
El Cajon Mountain Trail (El Capitan Preserve)
Lakeside Foothills • Demanding Out-And-Back Mountain Climb • Best For Experienced Hikers
A notoriously tough rollercoaster of a trail that delivers rugged terrain and serious bragging rights.
Locals know this as one of the most challenging hikes in San Diego County, with constant ups and downs on the way to a rocky summit. The payoff is a wild, backcountry feel just minutes from suburban streets, plus far-reaching views over the San Diego River canyon. Start at sunrise with plenty of water and expect a full-day effort.
03
Balanced challenge and scenery
Iron Mountain Trail
Poway • Open Ridge And Summit Trail • Great For Sunrise And Sunset
A popular, moderately strenuous hike over open slopes to a panoramic summit with classic East County views.
Iron Mountain offers a good middle ground: more of a workout than a park stroll, but far less punishing than El Cajon Mountain. The wide trail winds through boulders and chaparral before stacking up switchbacks to the summit. Locals love it for golden-hour hikes when the light washes over Poway, Ramona, and the surrounding peaks.

Most photographed peak
Mount Woodson via Potato Chip Rock
Near Ramona Along Highway 67 • Rocky Peak With Famous Photo-Op • Social-Media Crowd Pleaser
A steady climb to a boulder-studded summit, capped by the razor-thin Potato Chip Rock that draws hikers from all over.
Despite its internet fame, Mount Woodson is still a satisfying workout for Winter Gardens hikers willing to make the short drive. The Highway 67 route is direct and steep, with long stretches on a paved but rugged service road and big views along the way. Expect lines at the rock on weekends; midweek mornings are much quieter.

Shady close-to-home escape
Louis A. Stelzer County Park
Lakeside • Creekside And Hilltop Nature Trails • Best For Families And Casual Walkers
A small but varied network of oak-shaded paths, creekside stretches, and short hill climbs just minutes from Winter Gardens.
Stelzer is where many East County locals go when they want nature without committing to a big summit day. Easy loops follow the seasonal creek and wind through mature oaks, with a short climb up to viewpoints for those who want a bit more effort. It’s a welcoming spot for kids, newer hikers, and anyone looking for a quick green break close to home.
