Best overall ridge hike
Homestead and Blue Ridge Loop
Stebbins Cold Canyon, West Of Winters • Exposed Ridge And Canyon Loop • Best For Strong Hikers Chasing Views
A steep, view-packed loop that links the Homestead and Blue Ridge trails high above Putah Creek.
This is the big, committing hike people talk about when they mention Winters trails, with sustained climbing, rocky singletrack, and sweeping vistas toward Lake Berryessa and the Central Valley. Expect long stretches without shade and some narrow, uneven footing, so it plays best in cooler weather with sturdy shoes and plenty of water. Parking is right off Highway 128, but spots fill quickly on weekends, so locals tend to start early or aim for late-afternoon light.
02
Best quick canyon loop
Stebbins Cold Canyon Loop Trail
Lower Stebbins Cold Canyon • Shaded Creek-And-Canyon Circuit • Best For A Quick Workout Close To Town
A shorter loop that samples Cold Canyon’s creek, switchbacks, and viewpoints without committing to the full ridge traverse.
Starting from the same general area as the big ridge routes, this loop climbs quickly out of the creek corridor, then winds through oak woodland with peeks into the canyon. It still delivers a solid workout, but the distance and elevation feel more manageable if you only have a morning or evening to spare. The trail is popular, so midweek or early-morning starts offer the quietest experience and the coolest temperatures.

Best in-town stroll
Winters Putah Creek Nature Park
Downtown Winters Along Putah Creek • Flat Creekside Paths And Parkland • Best For Easy Walks And Picnics
An easygoing network of paths and dirt tracks that follow Putah Creek right from the edge of downtown.
Under the old railroad trestle, you can wander shaded riverside paths, watch for herons and ducks, and step onto gravel bars when creek levels are low. It is ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone wanting to stretch their legs before or after a meal in town, with benches and picnic spots never far away. Bikes, strollers, and leashed dogs all feel at home here, making it a versatile everyday spot for locals.
04
Best lakeshore ramble
Lake Solano Shoreline Trail
Lake Solano County Park, West Of Town • Lakeshore Walking Path With Birdlife • Best For Mellow Nature Strolls
A gentle path along Lake Solano with big shade trees, quiet inlets, and frequent bird and wildlife sightings.
Just up the road from Winters, this trail traces the edge of Lake Solano with minimal elevation gain and plenty of spots to stop and linger by the water. It is a favorite for slower-paced walks, birding, and stretching your legs between fishing or picnicking sessions. Expect a small day-use fee and busier picnic areas on warm weekends, but the shoreline itself often feels surprisingly relaxed.
05
Best half-day escape
Pena Adobe & Lagoon Valley Park
Lagoon Valley Park, Near Vacaville • Rolling Hill And Lakeside Trail Network • Best For Varied Group Hikes
A sprawling open-space park with loops around the lake and steeper hill trails looking back toward Winters and the Coast Range.
About a 20-minute drive from Winters, Lagoon Valley offers enough interconnected trails to tailor a route to nearly any fitness level, from flat laps near the water to punchy climbs up toward the ridgeline. The mix of open grassland and oak-dotted slopes gives big-sky views and classic foothill scenery, especially green in late winter and spring. There is usually a parking fee, and cows sometimes graze on the hillsides, so be prepared for a bit of mud and a true working-landscape feel.
