01
Best overall pick
Hi-View Nature Trail
Black Rock Canyon Area • Short Scenic Loop With Broad Valley Views • Best First Hike In The Area
A compact loop that quickly climbs to a sweeping overlook of Yucca Valley and the western edge of Joshua Tree National Park.
If you only have time for one hike, Hi-View is the easiest way to understand what makes the high desert special. The trail winds through healthy stands of Joshua trees before topping out on a ridge where you can see the town, distant peaks, and sunset color in one turn of the head. Go in the late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures.
02
Best summit-style hike
Warren Peak Trail
Black Rock Canyon Backcountry • Longer Out-And-Back Climb To A Panoramic Peak • Best Half-Day Workout
This steady climb from Black Rock Campground to Warren Peak rewards the effort with one of the widest views in the western park.
Starting from the same general area as Hi-View, Warren Peak quickly feels wilder and more remote. The route threads through washes and open slopes before the final push to a rocky summit with views toward San Gorgonio, the Coachella Valley, and deep into Joshua Tree. Bring plenty of water and expect a few hours on trail, especially if you like to stop for photos along the way.
03
Best escape from the heat
Big Morongo Canyon Preserve
Morongo Valley • Shady Wetland Preserve With Linked Loop Trails • Best For Birding And Families
Boardwalks and well-marked paths wind through cottonwoods, willows, and marshy habitat that feel a world away from the open desert.
Just a short drive down the grade from Yucca Valley, Big Morongo is where locals go when they want trees, shade, and running water. You can keep it easy on the flat loops and overlooks, or follow longer trails deeper into the canyon for more seclusion. It is a great pick for mixed groups, since everyone can choose a loop that matches their energy level and still finish back at the same trailhead.
04
Most rugged local outing
Pioneertown Mountains Preserve – Pipes Canyon
North Of Yucca Valley Near Pioneertown • Rugged Canyon And Mesa Trails In Protected Foothills • Best For Adventurous Hikers
Pipes Canyon offers a more remote, backcountry feel with boulder-lined washes, volcanic rock, and big-sky views over the valley.
From the preserve trailhead near Pioneertown, you can follow Pipes Canyon into a corridor of rock walls and desert scrub that feels far more remote than its distance from town. Side trails climb to higher mesas where you can look back over Yucca Valley and the San Bernardino range. The footing is rockier and the signage sparser than in the national park, so this area suits hikers who are comfortable reading a map and managing their own pace.
05
Most iconic Joshua Tree experience
Hidden Valley Nature Trail
Joshua Tree National Park Central • Short Loop Through Classic Boulders And Joshua Trees • Best Quick-Hit Desert Sampler
A one-mile loop that packs in giant rock formations, dense Joshua trees, and interpretive signs about the park’s natural history.
Hidden Valley is a bit farther from Yucca Valley than the Black Rock trails, but still an easy drive for a short, high-reward hike. The path meanders through an enclosed basin ringed by cliffs where you can watch climbers, explore side nooks, and photograph textbook desert scenery. Arrive early or near sunset to dodge mid-day crowds and harsh light on the rocks.
